After the historic agreement between Aermacchi and the American Harley-Davidson, the first sports model called Ala d’oro made its debut, equipped with a horizontal single-cylinder engine of 175 and 250 cc displacement with valve distribution by rods and rockers, chassis single steel beam with pressed steel reinforcements and Ceriani suspensions both at the front and at the rear.
The Ala d’Oro 250, which already had excellent performances in the production model, became the bike with which many private riders ventured into competitions, also obtaining excellent results.
Of course, the standard Golden Wing underwent profound changes to adapt to the new role of racer. Aermacchi also prepared an official bike that made its debut in the World Championship at the Assen circuit with Alberto Pagani in the saddle.
